For most of the summer Doc and I have been pretty much down in the dumps. This summer seemed like the worse one in many years.

For some reason Doc hooked up with one of his old prospecting students who wanted to play in the dirt. This guy is one of those kind of people you meet that are few and far between. We spent 2 days moving overburden, digging holes and fixing roads. last nite he blew a coupler on the bucket. So this morning we get out early to fix it and neither one of use had the right size wrenches with us. So I go to town to get the stuff we need and he could still use the bucket so he widen the hole and did some more road repair. Well by the time I got back, he had blown a rear tire. So we are done. The picture you are about to see is what left of our little west hole after December’s floods.

The above pictures were from the first day and about 3 hours of the second day.
This next set of pictures will come in two’s. One marked one plane so that you can get a feel for what we are doing. Man some people pay good money to learn this information.
In the first two I try to help you get a feel for how small our hole was.

Friday, turned into on hellsh day. We blew 2 couplers to the hoe and blew out a rear tire.
But all in all we had alot of fun and in what little time we had the gold wasn’t half bad.

Hard Rock Days in Cripple Creek

Dale Weaver 19931.jpg The picture on the left is of a gentleman by the name of Dale Weaver. He was one of the few independent miners left in 1993. Dale is a quit man, heavy thinker and creator of things not found in stores.

We met Dale at 7am in Cripple Creek for breakfast and as soon as we met we knew that we’d seen each other before(which we hadn’t) and that we had a lot to talk about. We did the 99 cent tour of Cripple Creek, Victor and Anaconda and returned to Cripple Creek for lunch. During lunch we talked about the old days and how gambling coming into town wasn’t going to help the miners much. Well, we put lunch away and went to Dale’s home, which was on the mining claim which was patented.

Dales Home.jpg This is a picture of Dale’s house in 1993. As I understand it today, his mine and properity have been taken over by the Big open pit mining company that is operating in the whole are now. Please do not take me wrong on this. I believe that miner’s, the environmentalist and the BLM can work together, but it will take time and I will probable be dead by then. Dale sold his place because he had reached the of his line. He just got to old and a mine accident, he got his arm caught in the jaw crusher, caused him to retire.

The following pictures are of his mine and the ore. He asked me if I could give him a rough estimate of what it would cost to rebuild the collar and the shoring for the first 50 feet. I never heard back from him the next spring and called our friends in Woodland Park to see if he was ok. That’s when we found out about the accident.

The rest of the pictures are of Dale & I going over the underground maps of his mine and some samples of his ore.
