Hey Jess,

I think the mistake a lot of guys make is thinking that you can make money gold prospecting. Nobody ever made bank prospecting, the money is in placer mining itself. That's the easy part, mining the gold that has been found. As you said, gold prospecting is a way of life. If it's not, you'll likely not make pay from one day to the next because after all, if you can't find it, you can't mine it.

Hey Mike,

Yep, you sound like one of the rare people who are actually in a position to give it a shot. I think having all the mining equipment first is a big part of it. If you are already set up to do it for recreation, the transition to pro would be easier. Of course, knowing when to get out would be a big part of it as well.

Ya gotta have nothing to lose, really.

Tua,

Yes, it's all about the characteristics of the land. On a large scale, it's about whether the geology of the area supports gold mineralization. Am I seeing the colors and features which support that? Has gold been found in the area before now? If I know there is gold, it's about how gold moves and where it comes from. Gold is about the heaviest thing out there and it sinks and tends to get stuck in certain spots. It tends to come from certain places and is associated with certain kinds of host stone. Knowing these tendencies and how they manifest is how to find gold.

The gold detector is just a tool. I'll find gold in the same places with a drywasher, a gold pan or a whisk broom. In other words, the tool doesn't matter to the gold.

Good luck and thanks for posting.

Sir,
Are you the same Chris Ralph that authored "Gold formed as Natural ChrystalsGold Nuggets and gold quartz specimens?" I want nothing from you but I would like to tell you what a great entire article your wrote and all the info you put into this article. The sites you directed one to are fantastic.
I have saved the entire piece. I live in Largo, Florida and about six months ago, I started to buy small quantities of gold and silver and coins. I'm 72 and am trying to put something away for my wife if anything happens to me. I can't tell you how greatful I am for your article.
If you are not one in the same, thanks any way and have a blessed Christmas and a healthy 2012. God bless you. BTW, Largo is just northwest of St. Petersburg on the boundry. I'm not in the key namely Key Largo.
Thanks.

I have planned on full time prospecting for many years. I have nothing to tie me down such as kids wife ect...and have all the equipment i need to get started. I am a member of the G.P.A.A and the New 49'ers and have two forty acre claims in black hills south dakota, and found enough gold to cover my costs on my claims. My claims are mainly for learning and practice, just being in the beautiful wilderness away from the all the bs you run into was well worth it! This has been my life long dream and i plan to see it through win lose or draw! In the end i think it will be worth seeing the country and meeting new people, all the gold in the world cant measure up to the life changing adventure! finding some good pay streaks might measure up a little lol !

Ted, I agree with you about the expectation of massive ROI from gold recovery by those new to the gold prospecting arena. You make the point that one should be prepared for whatever the venture is or be prepared or run a "splendid chance of starving to death if he tackles placer mining in Arizona." So true, for any entreprenurial enterprise, but especially true for finding gold. A little prospecting preparation can make the odds so much better though. Too bad there aren't more who seek the help of others in preparing & gaining experience before they jump in...

Considering gold prospecting as a way of life; if it was so easy it wouldn't be worth so much!

Thanks for your input Pete, it's appreciated. Sorry to have to inform you but unfortunately, Bob Duncan, the author of this post died just a couple of months ago. He will be missed by many but certainly would have been glad to hear from you. There are not too many old timers left these days. Best to you and yours and I hope to hear from you again.

I am Dale Weavers's cousin, and I worked in the El Paso mine in 1972-3. He is still alive and in a nursing home. I named my elder son after him and there are none like him in this false world. Dale was real. He wasn't always popular just because of his candor. Thanks for posting this and if you have questions I can answer let me know.
